National Library of Australia - This web site is indexed as "a site of cultural and historical significance" by the National Library of Australia, in Canberra.
What is the Eureka Council? - The Eureka Council Inc. is an Incorporated Association, or a government registered non-profit group that was conceived in 1998, and registered in January of 2003. It is serving the social, cultural and heritage needs of Native, or Colonial and Anzac Australians. It is a home for all those who can say "I am proud to be Australian".
Who are the Native Australians and where did they come from? - Contrary to the common belief, not all Australians know where they came from before their families arrived in Australia. Vast numbers of Australians, probably numbering into the millions, will never be able to discover where their families came from, because the necessary records were either not recorded in the first place, or because those records that were made have since been lost of destroyed. For these Australians, Australia's Colonial Heritage is the only heritage or identity they will ever have. For this reason, that Heritage must be treasured and preserved as a matter of urgency.
Those for whom records were never made are generally referred to as Class 1 Natives, and those for whom the records have been destroyed (usually by fire or flood) are referred to as Class 2 Natives. There is a third class of Native Australian, and referred to as Class 3. These people do know where they came from; but no longer care, because they there now complete in their Australian Identity.
We have claimed the term "Native" since the 1830's; which is why the Aborigine chose the title of "Indigene" to describe themselves in the following century.
It is necessary for all Multicultural Australians to strive towards Native status in their hearts because failure to do so will lead to terrible harm for their children. Those of us who have been here for 15 to 20 generations understand that Multiculturalism is a transitory phase that begins to close as the third generation is being born. At this time the immigrating grand-parents come to the end of their natural lives, and fall asleep. When this happens, the living memory of that other place is lost; and from Generation 4 onwards, it becomes increasingly irrelevant as part of one's daily identity. Families who fail to complete the cultural transition from Multicultural to Native before this happens will suffer increasing dislocation, dysfunction and distress as a result. They will fall between the cracks; no longer able to identify with that, but not yet a part of this. Those Australian families of 12th to 20th Generation who have survived this process of cultural transition have set up the Eureka Council to help and encourage Multicultural Australians, Australians who are still in transition from one culture to another, to complete that process successfully, and thus avoid the harm that will come from failing to do so.
We also need to understand that new Class 2 Natives are being created all the time. We have recently seen a terrible cycle of bushfires in Canberra and Victoria that destroyed hundreds of family homes. How many family bibles, foreign birth certificates and passports were destroyed along with those homes? Give these families a generation to forget, and they too will have a know History that begins and ends in Australia. They will be Class 2 Natives.
Native, or Colonial and Anzac Australians, are strongly and completely at home in this place but they do have a number of special needs. These are not financial or social needs, but because they do not enjoy the cross-cultural enrichment that Multicultural Australians enjoy, our Native Australians need our Australian Colonial and Anzac Heritage and Culture to be preserved and protected. This is the only heritage or culture that these Australians will ever have.
The Eureka Council is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of that unique, uniquely Australian, culture and heritage. It costs $20 a year to be a member of the Eureka Council, but you can become Registered Supporter for free. (We realise that twenty dollars can be a lot in hard financial times.) As a Registered Supporter, we will keep you up to date, and fully include you as part of the larger national and cultural family, and you may retain as much anonymity as you wish.
