1895 Sunday soap boxes - History of Australia

1 March 1895 -  More and more Sydneysiders are flocking to the Domain each week to witness what has become a weekly festival of tree stump sermons.

Orators of all persuasions entertain the crowds with words of passion, humour and politics. Atheists, clergymen, socialists, aspiring politicians and striking labourers can be found shouting their grievances with the world.

The picturesque parklands have been compared to London’s Hyde Park, and like its famous cousin, the park is a favourite spot for family picnics.

The collection of colourful vendors drawn by the city’s latest tourist attraction is also growing. Ice-cream, ginger beer and fruit are to be had at the entrance of the park near the Catholic Church.
