1817- 46th Regiment of Foot (The South Devons)British Army, 1741, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot, Sydney, Newcastle, Parramatta, Van Diemens Land, hostile Indigenes, escaped convicts and bushrangers
The 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army. It was created in 1741 and amalgamated into The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in 1881. The 46th Regiment arrived in New South Wales to replace the 73rd Regiment of Foot in 1814. Whilst in New South Wales, the Regiment saw service in Sydney, Newcastle, Parramatta and Van Diemens Land. The 46th was used mainly as a guard and taskmaster for the Convict slave labour
force, as well as providing protection against hostile Indigenes, escaped convicts and
bushrangers. In 1820, a detachment apparently traveled on HMS Coromandel as escorts for convicts bound for Van Dieman's Land and New South Wales. |
