1881 - Australian population over 2 million - Australian History

31 May 1881 - The first Australia-wide census taken last month has revealed the Australian population has climbed over the 2 million mark to just over 2250000.

This is a rise of almost 600 000 in the last decade and more than a million in the last two decades. It has also shown the number of migrants born in the United Kingdom has dropped from 40 per cent of the total population ten years ago to 31 per cent, despite the fact the colonial governments are still advertising financial assistance to certain types of migrants. Those from England still make up the largest group from the United Kingdom at 378 735, followed by the Irish at 212 633 and Scottish at 98 274.

Most migrants from the United Kingdom are still heading for Victoria, with 40.95 per cent of UK-born migrants settled there, followed by 29.72 in New South Wales and 12.76 in South Australia.
