Bathurst hosts Federal Convention1896 - Federation - Federal Convention - Bathurst - Federation League - Australian Natives' Association - municipal councils - Chambers of Commerce - Chamber of Manufacturers - progress associations - Republican Union - labour Electoral Leagues -
18 November 1896 - The principles of Federation received a boost in public interest yesterday after the first day of a large Federal Convention being held in Bathurst. Unlike a similar conference held in 1891, delegates attending the convention come from the ranks of the people rather than those who exercisee power in the colonial Parliaments. The main organisations represented are several branches of the Federation League in Victoria and NSW, branches of the Australian Natives' Association, municipal councils, the Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Manufacturers, progress associations, the Republican Union and the labour Electoral Leagues. One of the main items on the agenda over the three day conference is to discuss difficulties in the Federal Constitution proposed by the 1891 Draft Bill. |
