27 June 1896 - A National Council of Women was formed at a large meeting held in Sydney yesterday. Made up of various women’s interest groups, the new council would ‘help women in many ways’, one of the organisers said. Organisations represented by the first council include the Women’s Literary Society, the Women’s Suffrage League, the Kindergarten Union and the Balmain Ladies’ Benevolent Society. Lady Hampden was elected as the council’s first president. Similar societies have been set up in the US, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Great Britain and New Zealand. One delegate, Miss Macdonald, said the council ‘would be a permanent body of advice and guidance in all that pertained to women’s work’.
